Keeping Fido Fit

Is your dog super playful and frisky? Or is your pup more interested in naps than in chasing toys? Although Fido’s exact requirements will depend on his age, weight, breed, and health, our canine pals all need some form of activity to stay healthy. Read on as an Indianapolis, IN vet offers some advice on keeping your pet in shape.

Playing

Playing is lots of fun for Fido, and it’s also a great way for you to keep him active. Spend time tossing a ball or stick for your furry friend every day. You can even get your pooch an automated ball launcher or a mechanical laser pointer.

Swimming

Swimming can be terrific exercise for dogs. It can be especially beneficial for large breeds and senior dogs, because it’s very easy on their bones and joints. That said, swimming isn’t suitable for every pooch. For instance, brachycephalic dogs, which are those pups with the cute pushed-in faces, lose their breath easily and are not good candidates for swimming. Ask your vet if swimming is suitable for Fido.

Walks

Regular walks are great for keeping your pup fit. Even if you have a yard for Fido to play in, be sure to walk him at least once a day. This will be good for you, too!

Running and Hiking

Some dogs are very athletic, and can make wonderful workout buddies. Just be sure to build your pet’s endurance slowly, so you don’t overexert him. If you take your canine friend running or hiking with you, bring plenty of water for Fido, and keep a close eye on him. If your pooch starts panting heavily or lagging behind, immediately stop, give him some water, and then head for home.

Indoor Options

When the weather is bad, take Fido’s workout indoors. Try holding a laser pointer, so your pup can chase that little red dot. You can even play Fetch inside, though you’ll of course want to stay away from any breakable objects. Or, get your furry buddy to do stair runs. Go to the top of the stairs, holding Fido’s favorite toy, then toss it and have him bring it to you. A few rounds of this will definitely get your pet’s heart pumping!
