Things to Consider Before Adopting a Reptile

Are you looking for a beautiful and unique pet? A reptile may be a great choice. Reptiles can make wonderful animal companions. They’re quiet, don’t smell, and won’t stain your rug or scratch up your couch. They’re also fascinating to watch! Reptiles do need quite a bit of care, however, so before adopting one, you’ll want to a little research and a lot of thinking. Read on as an Indianapolis, IN vet lists some things to consider before adopting a reptile.

Size

Many reptiles can become quite large. Your pet may be tiny when you bring him home, but he may need quite a bit of room when he grows up. Make sure you have the space to safely and comfortably accommodate your pet when he’s fully-grown.

Habitat

Our reptilian friends often have very specific environmental needs. While exact requirements will vary depending on what type of pet you have, you may need to invest in specialized heating, lighting, and/or humidity equipment. While the equipment itself may be a one-time purchase, it can use quite a bit of power, and may affect your utility bills.

Creepy Crawlies

Reptiles may be lovely, but feeding them is, well, not necessarily very pleasant. Some reptiles need to eat bugs, while others eat mice or rats. Needless to say, this is not for everyone! Make sure you can handle feeding your pet.

Interaction

While some of our scaled friends are more sociable than others are, reptiles aren’t usually the most affectionate pets. If you’re looking for an animal companion that will greet you happily, or cuddle up to you at night, a reptile may not be the best choice for you.

Longevity

Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. Many reptiles have quite long lifespans, and can live 20 years or even longer. If you’re can’t make that sort of commitment, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a reptile: just choose one with a short natural lifespan.

Petsitter

Another thing that can be difficult for reptile owners is finding someone that to care for your pet when you go out of town. Do you know someone who is willing and able to feed your scaled buddy?
