Advice for Cat Owners: How to Keep a Christmas Tree Standing

Are you ready for the holidays? We are! As you start decorating your tree, your furball will definitely be watching with bright eyes. After all, climbing the Christmas trees just may be Fluffy’s favorite part of the holiday. It really isn’t surprising that so many cats just can’t resist those pretty trees. After all, in the wild, kitties rely on trees for shelter, vantage points, and a way to escape predators, not to mention manicure stations. Read on for some great advice from an Indianapolis, IN vet on keeping your cat from knocking your tree over.

Choose Wisely

First and foremost, choose a tree with a solid, sturdy base. If your tree is wobbly, it won’t take much for your furball to pull it down!

Don’t Provide Easy Access

Try to place your tree in a corner, if possible. Avoid putting it close to sofas, desks, or other pieces of furniture that could provide your frisky furball with an easy-access launch pad.

Decorate Wisely

When decorating your tree, keep the dangling, shiny ornaments to the upper portion of the tree, and, if possible, leave the bottom part of the tree bare or sparsely decorated. In other words, don’t tempt the kitty!

Extra Support

Use fishing line to secure the top of your tree to a wall or ceiling. It won’t show, and the extra support can’t hurt!

Artificial Trees

Fake trees are just not as easy to climb as the real ones. Your feline friend may be less tempted by an artificial tree.

Sometimes, when dealing with kitties, one has to resort to bribery. Distract your cat with new toys or a great new window view. We also recommend that you take time to play with your furry pal every day. Use interactive toys to really get Fluffy engaged and moving. This will burn off some of your kitty’s excess energy, leaving you with a calmer, somewhat less frisky feline.

Always put your furball’s safety first. Tinsel, lights, and ornament hooks are all dangerous for kitties. Keep these things out of Fluffy’s reach!

Of course, don’t be surprised if you find Fluffy curled up among the presents. After all, kitties are precious gifts!
