Preparing for a New Kitten

If you’ve recently decided to get a new kitten, we would, first and foremost, like to congratulate you! Bringing home a new furbaby is a very fun and exciting time. You’re definitely in for a lot of cute moments, as there are few things more adorable than kittens. Read on as your Geist veterinarian gives some tips on getting ready for your new arrival!

Little Fluffy is going to want to explore every nook and cranny of her new home. When you’re a tiny little furball that can fit into all sorts of small spaces, this adventurous streak can lead to trouble! Seal off any gaps under or behind doors and furniture. You’ll also want to keep household appliances, such as toilets and dryers, closed. It’s far too easy for a curious kitten to hop into danger when your back is turned! Plastic bags, hanging cords, and small items, such as craft kits, should also be secured. Keep your cabinets shut, so the little one can’t get into any toxic household cleaners or medications. Also, make sure to remove any toxic plants.

Before bringing your baby furball home, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. Kitty’s food, dishes, litter box, toys, and bedding should all be ready for her arrival. It’s great for kitties to be taught proper scratching habits while young, so you may want to buy a scratching post or board. Don’t forget to pick up plenty of cat treats and toys! Last but not least, we recommend getting a soft comfy bed for your furball to snuggle up in.

Other Preparations

Do a bit of research in advance, so you’ll know when your kitty needs appointments for examinations, vaccines, and, if it hasn’t been done already, spay or neuter surgery. Even if you’ve raised kittens before, you’ll want to brush up on some kitty-care basics. Knowing how to recognize signs of illness in kittens is extremely important, as these tiny furballs are quite fragile, and can get sick quickly. If you have children, talk to them about the new arrival, and set down some ground rules for playing with and handling little Fluffy.
