Small Dogs

We have dogs of all shapes and sizes here in Indianapolis. One trend we have seen in recent years is the rise in popularity of small dogs and toy breeds. Little dogs have always had their fans, of course, but small and toy breeds are definitely quite popular now. It isn’t hard to see why, either. Small dogs can be easier to manage than big dogs. They tend to make smaller messes, and, with those little legs, don’t need to be walked as far or as long to get their exercise, and it’s a lot easier to rein them in if they want to run after something! Another benefit of getting a small dog: they can fit on your lap without squashing you. Like their larger buddies, little pooches all have their own personalities and temperaments.

Here are some of the most popular small dog breeds:

Boston Terrier

These little dogs have big personalities! Boston Terriers are family-friendly, and tend to get on great with children.

Maltese

These playful little powder puffs are very friendly and tend to get along well with other dogs and cats. They don’t shed a lot, so they’re a great choice for people with allergies.

Papillion

Papillions are very smart. They actually rank among the most intelligent of dog breeds. They are highly trainable, and very friendly. These little ones do need daily brushing, however, as their coats are prone to matting easily.

Pugs

Pugs have a special talent for winning people over. It’s hard to resist those big round eyes and expressive little faces. We think pugs are pretty adorable. They’re also friendly and quite often unintentionally hilarious to watch, especially when they’re snoring.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies are very popular companion dogs for celebrities, but they don’t care if you live in a huge mansion or a tiny apartment. These friendly, feisty pooches make up for their small stature in personality. They are quite lovable and super playful!

Chihuahua

Officially the world’s smallest dog breed, the Chihuahua packs a lot of personality into a small package. Chihuahuas don’t seem to realize how tiny they are; these little ones can be quite feisty, and are very loyal.

These are just a few small dog breeds; there are many more. When looking for a dog, breed is one consideration, but, regardless of size or breed, the right dog is always the one that touches your heart. Little dogs may be, well, little, but these small pooches definitely have a lot of love and loyalty for their owners. As they say, big things come in small packages!
